If I have a bright neon yellow bird feeder and a dark green feeder which one would birds prefer to eat out of? Does it matter?
Hypothesis:
I think they will be more attracted to the dark green one because its more like a tree, which is more natural for them and less obvious to predators.
Procedure and materials:
Materials-
Two bird houses (water jugs, wooden rods, a metal hook, a long metal rod)
spray paint-neon yellow
bird seeds
scale
paint-dark green
Procedure-
get supplies (see above)
make bird houses and hang them up
put bird seed into feeder
measure the amount of bird seed eaten in one week. i will measure in cups
graph my answers
Variables:
Independent variable- the color of the bird houses (one neon yellow and one dark green)
Dependent variable- how I measured the seed. I started out with 3 1/4 cups.
Well first I put the bird feeders too close to my house so no birds came and than I moved it to my yard. The bird houses were equal height and directly across the yard from each other. Also it rained so they got wet. The first day some birds came to the dark green one but not the yellow one, the second day birds came to both, the third day no birds came to the yellow one, the fourth day birds came to only the yellow which I thought was funny because everyday so far birds have come to the green one, and on the fifth day the birds really picked up eating from the green feeder.
Conclusion:
So my hypothesis was correct. Birds are more attracted to a darker color.

Research:
I found out that birds do see colors like humans. Actually they can see better than us, they can also see Ultra Violet.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080229075835AAFhOs2
